Building ‘green’ is becoming a business imperative, and more of Australia’s CBD commercial office building projects are seeking Green Star certification.

This voluntary, national environmental rating system evaluates the environmental design and construction of buildings – from site and materials selection through to building life-cycle impacts.

Zinc – here today…and tomorrow

Zinc contributes to the overall environmental performance of a building because:                 

  • It is durable, to the point where its overall cost-effectiveness and ecological impact are measured on a time scale not even accessible to most standard building products
  • It is recyclable, because it’s easy to recover and has good scrap value
  • It is maintenance-free
  • It has low embodied energy, requiring less energy to extract and produce than copper, aluminium or stainless steel
  • It has no pollutant residues, so does not cause air, water or soil pollution on site.

At the current extraction rate, ore reserves are predicted to satisfy our zinc needs for several centuries.

Copper – a better choice, naturally

Copper is a genuine natural material that can contribute to the overall environmental performance of a building.

  • It is virtually 100% recyclable, with around 40% of the total consumption of refined copper currently being scrap-based
  • It is cost-effective to work with, due to its good conductivity and great strength
  • It is more corrosion resistant than most other roofing materials available. The pale green colour, or patina, is typical of older copper and a visible effect of oxidation
  • It requires minimal maintenance
  • It is a genuine natural material
  • In roofing applications, it releases only a tiny amount of residue.
